Q. What is the Jimmy Conway Testimonial?
The Jimmy Conway Testimonial involves a series of events in August and September honoring former Portland Timbers captain and assistant coach Jimmy Conway.
Q. Who is Jimmy Conway?
As mentioned above, Jimmy played with the Portland Timbers. He was active as a player from 1978-80 and served as assistant coach from 1980-82 and again from 2001-2005. He also played at the top levels of soccer in England and Ireland and was selected 20 times to play for Ireland’s international team. He coached 16 years at Pacific University & Oregon State and for 28 years was Director of Coaching for the Oregon Youth Soccer Association. He also was a national staff coach for the US Soccer Federation.
Q. Why is Jimmy being honored?
In addition to being one of the most accomplished, skillful and entertaining players to wear a Timbers uniform, this celebration also is a way for the Northwest soccer community to thank Jimmy for his three decades of service to youth and college soccer, training both new coaches and young players the finer points of The Beautiful Game. He recently has been diagnosed with trauma-induced dementia.
Q. Who is organizing or sponsoring these events?
The Testimonial is organized by friends of Jimmy, primarily from the soccer community. Some of the events are underwritten by corporate sponsors and other organizations that recognize the contributions Jimmy has made to our community and the sport.

Q. Can anyone attend these events?
All events require a ticket or fee. Admission to the first two events (the golf tournament, and the Dinner/Auction) is limited by the capacity of the venues. Admission to the golf tourney and Dinner/Auction is open to adults only and is by invitation only. Tickets to the Testimonial Match and College Appreciation Days should be available on a day-of-game basis at the respective venues.
Q. Are tickets being sold?
As noted above, tickets and reservations are required for all events and are subject to availability:
• Reservations for the Golf Tournament and Testimonial Dinner/Auction currently are available by invitation only. However, continue to check this website for the possibility that additional tickets do become available.
• Tickets for the College Appreciation Days are available from the respective university box offices and should be available on a “walk up” basis on the day of the event. Contact each school for availability and exact schedule of events honoring Jimmy.

Q. Who benefits from Jimmy Conway Testimonial events?
All proceeds (after expenses) from the silent auction and testimonial dinner will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Oregon Chapter to support their full range of activities and services.
The Testimonial exhibition match (Timbers Alumni v. Oregon Select XI), and the College Appreciation Days are occurring in conjunction with previously scheduled events requiring admission fees by those organizations. As such, those proceeds remain with those organizations.
Q. How else is Jimmy being honored?
Besides the cooperative effort involved in the Jimmy Conway Testimonial, organizations that he has been involved with during his career individually are honoring him in a manner appropriate to their function. For example, the Oregon Youth Soccer Association has established the Jimmy Conway Coach Education Scholarships, providing financial assistance for local youth coaches to attend the US Soccer Federation National “D” license course, offered periodically by OYSA, and has also named a competitive age-group trophy after him.
